The Minneapolis College of Art and Design has been bringing the internationally known workshop, SGMS: Schoolgirls and Mobilesuits: Culture and Creation in Manga and Anime to both high school and college students, academics, professionals and the public since 2001.

It is rare and remarkable for anything about anime and manga fandom in America to be a “fine old tradition,” but this annual autumn workshop on anime and manga has become something that fans look forward to with eager anticipation. Combining a cosplay fashion show, Otaku bazaar, anime screenings of new cool stuff, academic (but not boring!) lectures and demonstration classes in manga, this workshop provides an opportunity to hear well-known speakers, get portfolio critiques, see and buy dojinshi and have a lot of fun.

Unlike a convention, where swag is all, this workshop digs deeper into the content and technique of these wonderful art forms and allows fans to network with scholars, industry folk and creators. It is also available for an inexpensive and transferable college credit, even for high school students. This year’s returning favorites include Marc Hairston, writer on anime for several journals and magazines; Crispin Freeman, notable anime voice actor; Tania del Rio, creator of Archie Comics’ Sabrina; and Jeremy Ross, online editor of Tokyopop. New guests include Helen McCarthy, writer of the indispensable The Anime Encyclopedia; Shu Kuge, scholar and mangaka; and Robert Ten Pas, mangaka for Tokyopop.

This is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages and educational backgrounds to experience anime and manga in a more profound discussion, with the added benefit of access to key people who are involved in these well-loved art forms on many different levels. See you there!
